Intro to Steeps
Improve your backcountry performance and gain the confidence to tackle more terrain on skis.
The course is for skiers who are looking to work on their off piste skiing technique. This course is based at Cairn Gorm making use of the ski lifts to ensure there are plenty descents. This will be combined with short skins back to the lifts, or from the top of lifts.
The day will cover functional ski technique with tips and tricks to help you get the most out of Scotland’s varied terrain. Content included will likely be:
Short and long turns on piste focusing on the fundamental elements of skiing
Gaining grip on icy terrain
Adjustments for different snow types
Gaining control and confidence on steeper slopes
Making turns and jump turns in narrow spaces
Increasing flow
This course is delivered by Gavin Carruthers & Blair Aitken. Feedback will be given throughout the course and any media collected will be shared with the group after the course. If possible video feedback will be given on the day, but this is weather and time dependent.
An uplift ski pass may need to be purchased from the ski resort in addition to the course fee.
Alternate options open to skiers & snowboarders would be Ropework & Mountaineering Skills or Steeps & Gullies

PRE-REQUISITES
As this course has a strong focus on your downhill ski technique, this course is for skiers only. You will need to be a confident black run skier and have skied off piste before, ideally in Scotland. You should have experience skiing different snow types but we will help you with this. You should have skied toured before.
You need to be fit enough for two full days skiing, a mixture of uplift and ski touring.
You need to be able to purchase a ski pass or touring uplift pass for Cairn Gorm each day.
You need to have your own ski touring and avalanche safety equipment, please get in touch if this is a problem though and we will help you.
If you have not skied in a while it would be necessary to get practice either on snow, indoors or at a dry slope before attending.
No under 18s may attend this course.
